![]() Lunch on the Sheep River 28"x32" |
"Lunch on the Sheep River" takes place on a bountiful expanse of river delta at the head of Kachemak Bay. The delta is divided in to three by the rivers Fox, Sheep and the Bradley. The rich salt grass has been the traditional summer graze for stock owned by ranchers and farmers in the Homer area for a hundred years. The rivers provide natural boundaries that these Cattlemen use as management areas. In early spring the cows are pushed up and left for the summer and in late fall brought home. There are times when a herd of cows become impatient and simply head home alone. |
| This lunch of shared food was a hurriedly concocted group gathered to drive some cattle back across the Sheep, as they had come home to their farm, in Homer, too early. Being rather tardy on the actual pushing of the cattle we decided to lounge and share our lunch by the cattlemen’s cabin, on the bank of Sheep River. It was a spectacular yellow day against blue glaciers and the orange of fall. Canadian Geese were numerous, keeping the day from being too quiet. After lunch we thought one more adventure for the day would be perfect so we rode over to where we heard there was a dead cow in the woods. On the edge of the woods what appeared to be two big Hereford bulls turned out to be a brown bear. The woods suddenly seemed less exciting, back out to the salt flats we went to ride happily home. |
